Graduate Research Assistant - Diversity Council and Office of Minority Affairs

The Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity is seeking a Graduate Research Assistant to assist in planning and implementing a diversity plan for the University of Washington. The RA will work with the University Diversity Council, which is the primary advisory committee to the President on matters of diversity and equity at all three UW campuses. Members of the Diversity Council include members of the University administration, staff and faculty members; undergraduate and graduate students representing student groups and student government; and members of the community with an interest in diversity in higher education. Council members share diversity best practices, engage in institutional diversity planning, and make recommendations to University administration about student, faculty and staff diversity; inclusive climate and curriculum; and institutional transformation. This position also assists in planning and managing all events, research, and projects of the University Diversity Council. The RA reports to the Diversity Council Coordinator

Responsibilities:
Assist supervisor and Vice President for Minority Affairs and Vice Provost for Diversity in working with all sectors of the University to establish plans and implement programs and activities to achieve University goals for diversity;

Writes, drafts, and edits communication materials, minutes, and academic documents related to the Council

Gathers and analyzes national and UW data on diversity at UW for reports, publications, and other communications tools

Coordinates meetings of the Council and its sub-committees and working groups

Updates the Council website and maintains a listserv and membership lists

Qualifications:

Required:
Master's degree or equivalent in educational administration, educational policy, public affairs, or related field; research experience in diversity and social justice issues in an educational setting; exceptional oral and written communication skills, including experience in writing academic reports; proven ability to work with multiple constituencies and people of varied backgrounds; excellent computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and web authoring tools.

Desired: Knowledge of diversity initiatives, their goals, best practices, and impact; ability to articulate goals and strategies of diversity in higher education to diverse constituencies.

Teaching Assistantship - Aquatic and Fishery Sciences

The School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (SAFS) is a unique and nationally recognized institution that provides bachelor, master, and doctoral instruction to an international student population. The school includes 30 faculty (and 16 emeritus faculty), 125 graduate and 100 undergraduate students and about 90 administrative and research staff. The breadth and scope of SAFS encompasses programs for undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and service in basic and applied aquatic sciences with an emphasis on fisheries management and aquatic resource conservation. Our faculty, staff and students have access to myriad aquatic habitats and rich biological resources, and they are involved in interdisciplinary partnerships with other academic programs, as well as public and private organizations and environmental and regulatory agencies. Teaching Assistant responsibilities include:

Research Assistantship - Center for Reinventing Public Education

The Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) is a research center at the University of Washington Bothell. The Center engages in research and analysis aimed at developing focused, effective and accountable schools in urban areas, and systems that support them. The Center’s work seeks to inform community leaders, policy makers, school and school system leaders and the research community. The Center pursues a national program of research and development on such proposals as charter schools, school contracting, equitable district budgeting policies, choice, and school system decentralization. It also conducts research into reform initiatives in Washington State and the Seattle Public Schools.

BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The CRPE Research Assistant for CRPE IT/Computing Support will support the research of the center by providing general computer support to the Center’s approximately 35 staff members, including faculty, researchers and graduate students, along with collaborators and contractors. We are a predominantly Apple computing environment.

Responsibilities include:
o Provide technical support to all Center staff – installing, maintaining and upgrading Macs connected to onsite and campus servers and resources via Ethernet and onsite wireless. Including support given over phone/email to off-site staff.
o OSX Server (Xserve): immediate backups, restorations, user account updates/management, etc. using Retrospect, ARD, and Workgroup Manager.
o Windows XP Secure Data Network (SDN) Server: installing new data sets, software, patches as needed; troubleshooting printer and software issues along with the 5 Windows XP workstations.

o Update and maintain system level software (Mac OS 10.3 through OS X 10.5.4, device drivers, memory managers and communications and network software). Install and configure hardware, software, and peripheral devices to allow easy and secure interface with our server and UW computing network.

o Assist in software support (provide training, troubleshooting and maintenance) for all Center staff including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and especially Endnote, Adobe design products, SPSS, FileMaker Pro, Palm (along with synching issues).

o Track and maintain computer inventory, insurance database, and software inventory and compliance.

o Analyze current systems and research new product releases, security patches, updates, relevant new technology, and methods in order to streamline and improve processes. Evaluate and communicate proposed updates/changes, along with costs, to staff.

o Other duties as assigned.

Research Assistant - Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center (msktc.washington.edu) is looking for a part time graduate student to assist in systematic reviews of medical evidence for a variety of rehabilitation topics. Other duties may include the development of informational and training materials, manuscripts for publications, grant applications, and project planning and management. These activities are focused on systematic reviews of the evidence in burn injury, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury and the translation of evidence-based research for multiple audiences. Responsibilities will include some combination of the following depending on the skills and interests of the candidate(s):

Required Skills:
• To facilitate systematic reviews of evidence, formulate targeted searches of medical research databases, making use of each database's controlled vocabulary (such as MeSH for Medline) to maximize both precision and recall.
• Given a preliminary topic for a systematic review, consult with subject-matter experts, review likely candidate documents, and examine controlled vocabularies to identify promising keywords for database searches.
• Perform preliminary evaluations of search result sets to characterize the topic focus and depth of available medical evidence, communicate these findings to subject-matter experts, and collaborate to refine search strategies.
• Document finalized search protocols for each database.

Desired Skills:
• Help to develop surveys, conduct qualitative and quantitative data analysis, assist in program evaluation particularly for information needs studies.
• Assisting in the development of conceptual structure for materials to be produced by center staff, and edit and revise these products for final publication.
• Collaborate in the development of visual materials, graphic materials, and in the organization and presentation of training and technical assistance materials, both on the public web site and on the intranet.

Requirements:
Full-time matriculated graduate student at UW. Major in library and information sciences is preferred.

Part Time Position - The Museology Graduate Program

The Museology Graduate Program is looking for a part-time worker to oversee evaluation projects that Museology Graduate Students will be conducting in local museums. The position will be posted through the university soon. They're looking for someone with a background in research and evaluation. It is a 3 year position funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The position has not been approved yet so description might change in the next few weeks. As 1/2 time position, it comes will full benefits.

Basic Description of position: A 1/2 time person will be hired Winter 2009 to coordinate the development of Audience Research studies conducted by Museology graduate students in local museums, zoos, and aquaria. This position will provide support to the New Directions project with responsibility for coordinating a cadre of graduate students conducting onsite evaluations, while also coordinating communication with host institutions. While this person will have access to evaluation experts within the leadership team, they should have a firm grasp of evaluation or research techniques and ethics and be able to work with community professionals and graduate students. The position will be posted through University of Washington.

About the Project: New Directions will prepare a new generation of evaluators and museum practitioners, through an innovative apprentice-styled laboratory that integrates the strengths of mentoring, fieldwork, academics, and client-centered experiences. Led by University of Washington's Museology Program, one of the oldest and largest museum studies programs in the country and joined by partners Woodland Park Zoo and the Learning in Informal and Formal Education Science of Learning Center (LIFE), New Directions will develop a model of university-community collaboration where students work with client museums to conduct evaluation under the guidance of a Research Mentor. Building on an approach of "Professionalism through Practice", students will progress from initial coursework to data collectors, then methodology specialists, and eventually project coordinators, providing experience in project management, collaboration and leadership. The staff at participating museums will advance their personal and institutional knowledge about their visitors and the field of museum evaluation.

Graduate Staff Assistant - Undergraduate Research Program

The Undergraduate Research Program (URP) has a great opportunity for a Graduate Staff Assistant. The URP facilitates research experiences for undergraduates with faculty members across the disciplines. URP staff assists students in planning for an undergraduate research experience, identifying faculty mentors and projects, defining research goals, presenting and publishing research findings, obtaining academic credit, and seeking funding for their research. Stiefel Graduate Study Awards

The Ernest R. Stiefel Graduate Study Awards are awarded to graduate or professional students who are members of Phi Beta Kappa chapters at the University of Puget Sound, University of Washington, Washington State University or Whitman College; and who will attend either the University of Puget Sound or University of Washington. In 2009, two awards of $2,000 each will be given. Deadline: Monday, June 22, 2009

Although the award amount is not great, the number of applicants each year is usually very low, so there is an excellent chance that a qualified applicant will receive an award.

UW Fellowships - Project of Interdisciplinary Pedagogy

The Graduate School Fund for Excellence and Innovation (GSFEI) and Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences (IAS) at the University of Washington Bothell are collaborating to offer a teaching fellowship for 4-6 doctoral students who have been advanced to candidacy and are interested in the theory and practice of interdisciplinarity and interdisciplinary pedagogy.

Fellows in the Project of Interdisciplinary Pedagogy (PIP) work closely with faculty mentors in IAS, participate in a day-long workshop focused on interdisciplinarity and interdisciplinary course design and pedagogy, teach one interdisciplinary course each quarter on the Bothell campus in an area related to their teaching and research interests, and engage in quarterly workshops with the other graduate students and faculty mentors in the cohort.
Further teaching opportunities during the 2010-2011 academic year may also become available.

Fellows will be compensated at the appropriate annual Graduate Student Service Appointment rate, including tuition waivers, and will receive an additional stipend of $750 for their participation in the early fall and quarterly workshops. Teaching Assistant - Biology

The Biology Department seeks 50% FTE temporary Winter Quarter 2009 teaching assistant position(s).

Biology typically hires between one and eight non-Biology Teaching Assistants every quarter, depending on commitments to Biology graduate students. TAs may be required to lead labs or quiz sections at lower division or upper division levels. Courses are offered in: Introductory Biology; Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology; Cell, Molecular and Developmental Biology; Plant Biology; and Physiology.

Responsibilities include: attending lectures, teaching sections, grading, and additional course specific requirements of individual instructors. For further information about possible courses see University course catalog and time schedules.

Salary:
Biology variable TA rate. Health insurance and operating fee waiver for eligible graduate students.
