Turkish Cultural Foundation Fellowships

The Turkish Cultural Foundation sponsors research on subjects related to the art and culture of Turkey, and to studies related to the preservation of Turkey’s artistic and cultural heritage. The TCF Fellowship Program’s mission is to recognize and assist students and researchers whose scholastic achievements reflect the commitment of the Turkish Cultural Foundation to research, document, preserve and promote Turkey’s cultural heritage.

Fellowships are open to scholars who are engaged in the research phase of doctoral studies and for scholars whose Ph.D. or equivalent professional training has been completed within the past 10 years.

AWARDS
Ten dissertation research grants and five post-doctoral fellowships are available each academic year to qualified applicants.
Amount Offered: USD 10,000 for PhD level fellowships and USD 15,000 for post-doctoral level fellowships.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
• Fellowships are intended for those who are enrolled in a Ph.D. program and are engaged in the research phase of the degree program leading to a dissertation, or have a Ph.D., or who possess an equivalent record of professional accomplishment and publications.
• Fellowship recipients will be selected based on the proposed research project and its relevance to the TCF’s mission. Academic standing, scholastic achievement, publications, experience, and letters of reference will be weighed into the decision.
• Candidates should be fluent in English, although the dissertations or the publications published as a result of this fellowship do not have to be in that language. All applicants are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency.

Fellowships for Intensive Advanced Turkish Language Study

Application Deadline is February 5, 2010.

For summer 2010, the American Research Institute in Turkey will offer full travel and fellowships for approximately 15 advanced students and scholars for participation in the summer program in advanced Turkish language at Bogazici University in Istanbul. This intensive program offers the equivalent of one full academic year of study in Turkish at the college level.

The fellowships cover round-trip airfare to Istanbul, application and tuition fees, and a maintenance stipend. Full-time students and scholars affiliated at academic institutions are eligible to apply.

ARIT Fellowships for Research in Turkey 2010 - 2011

The Fellowships: The American Research Institute in Turkey takes pleasure in inviting applications for two or three advanced fellowships made possible by support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The fields of study cover all periods of history in the general range of the humanities and include humanistically oriented aspects of the social sciences, prehistory, history, art, archaeology, literature, and linguisitics, as well as interdisciplinary aspects of cultural history. The fellowships for research in Turkey may be held for four to twelve continuous months during 2010 - 2011. Stipends in the range of $16,800 to $50,400 are available on the basis of individual proposals.

Eligibility: Scholars who have completed their formal training and plan to carry out research in Turkey may apply. They may be U.S. citizens or three-year residents of the U.S. Please consult ARIT headquarters on questions of eligibility. Advanced scholars may also apply for ARIT Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Institutes: ARIT maintains two research institutes in Turkey. ARIT in Istanbul has a research library concentrated on Byzantine and Ottoman Turkey. ARIT - Ankara focuses on art, archaeology, and ancient history in its library, and serves Turkish and American archaeologists through its programs. Both institutes have residential facilities for fellows and provide general assistance as well as introductions to colleagues, institutions, and authorities in Turkey.

Research Permission: Turkish law requires foreign scholars to obtain formal permission to carry out research at institutions in Turkey. ARIT fellowship applicants are responsible for obtaining the research permission and visa. In general, researchers should seek permission to carry out research from the director(s) of the institution(s) where they intend to work; this includes researchers who wish to work in libraries housed in Turkish museums. Most foreign scholars may enter Turkey on a tourist visa and apply for a research visa from within Turkey, or they may choose to procure a research visa from the Turkish embassy in advance of their arrival. Researchers who wish to work with collections housed in the Turkish archaeological museums, however, should make their applications through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate for Cultural Heritage and Museums. In addition, if the material they wish to work with is part of an excavation, researchers must submit a letter with their application that is signed by the excavation director giving permission to carry out research. ARIT reserves the right to withhold payment of fellowship stipends if appropriate research permission is not obtained.
