PURPOSE: As part of its mandate for "the increase and diffusion of knowledge," including the diverse ideas, skills, and cultures of our nation, the Smithsonian Institution pursues policies of equal opportunity and cultural diversity. Smithsonian fellowships and internships are awarded on the basis of these policies. Graduate Fellowships allow students to conduct research for ten-week periods in association with Smithsonian research staff members. Predoctoral, Postdoctoral, and Senior Fellowships allow students to conduct research for periods of three to twelve months.

ELIGIBILITY:

• Graduate Student Fellowships: Applicants must be formally enrolled in a graduate program of study, must have completed at least one semester, and must not yet have been advanced to candidacy in a doctoral program. Fellowships allow research for ten-week periods.

• Predoctoral Fellowships: Applicants must have completed coursework and preliminary examinations for the doctoral degree, and must be engaged in dissertation research. In addition, candidates must have the approval of their universities to conduct their doctoral research at the Smithsonian for a three- to twelve-month period.

• Postdoctoral and Senior Fellowships: Postdoctoral applicants must have held the doctoral degree or equivalent for fewer than seven years as of the application deadline. Senior Fellowship applicants must have held the doctoral degree or equivalent for more than seven years as of the application deadline. Applications for senior fellowships may be made up to two years in advance.

EVALUATION AND SELECTION: Applicants are evaluated on their academic standing, scholarly qualifications, experiences, the quality of the research project or study proposed and its suitability to Smithsonian collections, facilities, and programs.

Earth and Planetary Sciences Senior and Postdoctoral - $47,000 per year
Predoctoral - $27,000 per year
Graduate Students - $6,000

ARIT Fellowships for Research in Turkey 2010 - 2011

The Fellowships: The American Research Institute in Turkey takes pleasure in inviting applications for two or three advanced fellowships made possible by support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The fields of study cover all periods of history in the general range of the humanities and include humanistically oriented aspects of the social sciences, prehistory, history, art, archaeology, literature, and linguisitics, as well as interdisciplinary aspects of cultural history. The fellowships for research in Turkey may be held for four to twelve continuous months during 2010 - 2011. Stipends in the range of $16,800 to $50,400 are available on the basis of individual proposals.

Eligibility: Scholars who have completed their formal training and plan to carry out research in Turkey may apply. They may be U.S. citizens or three-year residents of the U.S. Please consult ARIT headquarters on questions of eligibility. Advanced scholars may also apply for ARIT Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Institutes: ARIT maintains two research institutes in Turkey. ARIT in Istanbul has a research library concentrated on Byzantine and Ottoman Turkey. ARIT - Ankara focuses on art, archaeology, and ancient history in its library, and serves Turkish and American archaeologists through its programs. Both institutes have residential facilities for fellows and provide general assistance as well as introductions to colleagues, institutions, and authorities in Turkey.

Research Permission: Turkish law requires foreign scholars to obtain formal permission to carry out research at institutions in Turkey. ARIT fellowship applicants are responsible for obtaining the research permission and visa. In general, researchers should seek permission to carry out research from the director(s) of the institution(s) where they intend to work; this includes researchers who wish to work in libraries housed in Turkish museums. Most foreign scholars may enter Turkey on a tourist visa and apply for a research visa from within Turkey, or they may choose to procure a research visa from the Turkish embassy in advance of their arrival. Researchers who wish to work with collections housed in the Turkish archaeological museums, however, should make their applications through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate for Cultural Heritage and Museums. In addition, if the material they wish to work with is part of an excavation, researchers must submit a letter with their application that is signed by the excavation director giving permission to carry out research. ARIT reserves the right to withhold payment of fellowship stipends if appropriate research permission is not obtained.

Application Deadline: Applications and three letters of recommendation must be received by NOVEMBER, 1 2009. The ARIT Committee on Fellowships expects to notify applicants of its decision by January 25, 2010.
